The Master of Arts in Urban Design (MAUD) offered by the NUS College of Design and Education is a programme leading from Asia, the epicentre of the world’s rapid urbanisation.    MAUD has stayed relevant to the needs of adult learners for exactly 25 years this year. It does so by offering unparalleled learning opportunities, tapping the experience of Singapore and cities in Asia as labs for design innovation and excellence.     To mark its 25th anniversary, MAUD will be celebrating with:  · International Keynote Series featuring world-renowned scholars in architecture and urban design – Aug, Sept, Oct, Nov · International collaborative urban design studios – Aug to Nov · Commemorative ceremony – Nov · Urban Design Education Forum – Nov · Alumni network launch - Nov   On how MAUD has stayed relevant all these years, programme director A/P Zhang Ye (Dr) explains: “We review and revamp our curriculum regularly to always provide students with a multi-perspective approach to Asian urban cha

Conversation - Alumni Geographical distribution and Mentorship

We had finally set up the Whatapps group 'MAUD Alumni' for every Alumni to have a common platform to converse with each other. Yes there are some challenges but with a little effort we could overcome the inconveniences, for a start, in Whatsapp, it would be good to change the text below the tab 'About' to your name, otherwise, they are all mobile numbers that make us digitally abstract to relate.  From the data that we had received from the Alumni forms, we gather some pertinent feedback and concern. I could categorize them as follows: Continuous learning and sharing of ideas Networking and expanding one's professional life Built a Urban Design Community Desire to design a better world Concern with the current bleak world trend Currently, the number of respondents to joining the Alumni Network stands at about Hundred. It is a good start. The majority are residing in Singapore designing for the region, followed by China, India, Australia, the Philippines, and Indones

Ebook Working Group - online meet up

Image
We organized a meet-up at about 9pm yesterday. It was a trial run of sorts. On one hand, we have to grapple with communication applications. In China the common app used is Wechat, however, in India, the apps cannot be downloaded at all. We had some of us using Whatsapp, but it is not working in China. Wechat is not commonly used in Australia or this region. Coupled with the fact that design work is time demanding, many were still traveling or in meetings.  We eventually decided on using zoom for our first meet-up. There were disruptions to the Zoom session as the free version only last for 40 minutes. Only three of us were able to onto Zoom, Ankur, Yuliang and myself. Others are separately brief through WhatsApp and Wechat. This web page will serve as a record and asynchronous collaborative document for follow-up action. On behalf of Dr. Zhang Ye, we expressed sincere thanks to all leads and members, especially Wang Xing for his readiness to mirror the site. We discussed the content k

Technology Desk - Using Social Media to effect change : ECO Environmentalist Ar. Tariq Alexander Qaiser

Technology Desk   Choo Meng Foo maudmusing@gmail.com Ar. Tariq Alexander Qaiser A great friend I admired when I was involved in a Hospital Master Plan in Karachi (Pakistan) as an Urban Designer. I began to have a better understanding of Pakistan. It was an eye-opener and a great learning experience that tickled my curiosity to understand the remote region east of Central Asia.  I had been watching the work done by  Tariq , impressed by his perseverance and his love for nature. He has been championing the conservation of the waterways and coast of Karachi. Urban development had been destroying the natural habitats of animals and traditional human settlements. His works opened up the conversation between the authorities and the environmentalists to come to terms with sustainable developments. His work is ongoing and admirable.  With his background as an Architect and environmentalist, he produced a series of Videos over a period of more than three years, documenting the diversity of Flor

After discussion with the Alumni groups and suggestions from them. We quickly formed a cross-region network eBook working group. More info here I contacted a few students and associates to form the Ebook working group base on the aim to share ideas and promote Urban Design. They are all very excited. In a few days, we will meet online to discuss further base on the suggestion and discussion in our previous meeting. I started this Urban Design blog site to facilitate casual and speedy communications. It will be made known, once the Ebook working group comes together.  Very fortunately we found leaders and members based on their residential geography who are willing to take up the responsibilities to gather and share ideas. Wang Xing – China Lead Ngo Minh Hung – Vietnam Lead Ankur Choudhury – India Lead Athanasios – Australia, New Zealand Lead Choo Meng Foo – Singapore Chief Lead Bee Lan – Singapore, member We are also looking for articles reviewers too, if there are professors (wit

Sharing of Ideas

Last Monday I had the opportunity to meet up with the Director of Urban Design (NUS) Zhang Ye , Jason , Yihan and Zhuoshu, the Alumni working committee. I love their idea of an ebook to commemorate the launch of the MAUD Alumni Club. I readily took up the lead, when asked, to produce the eBook. Learning, sharing ideas, and promoting a better world, whether Urban, suburban, or rural is welcome and wonderful. This coincides with my interest in expanding knowledge, hence this site would be the start to gathering ideas and bringing like-minded people. There are a few things that came to my mind that we can immediately set up. Setting up a working committee structure and recruiting members Setting up communication and adopting a flexible communication platform Sourcing for materials
