Ebook Working Group - online meet up

We organized a meet-up at about 9pm yesterday. It was a trial run of sorts. On one hand, we have to grapple with communication applications. In China the common app used is Wechat, however, in India, the apps cannot be downloaded at all. We had some of us using Whatsapp, but it is not working in China. Wechat is not commonly used in Australia or this region. Coupled with the fact that design work is time demanding, many were still traveling or in meetings.

We eventually decided on using zoom for our first meet-up. There were disruptions to the Zoom session as the free version only last for 40 minutes. Only three of us were able to onto Zoom, Ankur, Yuliang and myself. Others are separately brief through WhatsApp and Wechat. This web page will serve as a record and asynchronous collaborative document for follow-up action.

On behalf of Dr. Zhang Ye, we expressed sincere thanks to all leads and members, especially Wang Xing for his readiness to mirror the site.

We discussed the content keeping in view that the eBook shall be launched in early November. Below is the preliminary content sections.

  1. Messages (from Dean, Directors, Professors, and Notable Urban Design stakeholders) need to liaise with the school
  2. History and memories - all regional leads will gather information, and upload them to this website, they will be given access.
  3. Urban Design Articles - all will actively solicit articles from the world, and their suitability will be reviewed by the reviewers.
  4. Interviews, talks, and seminars -  We are planning an-online talk titled "What is Urban Design" to kick off the session, we will need 3-4 speakers and a moderator.
  5. Notable Design and studio practices - All leads can start by inviting submissions from members or professionals from their contacts.
  6. Featuring good design and completed urban design works - All leads contribute or gather works in this area.
Going by the member list, based on their Country of residence, China has the most members after Singapore, followed by India and then Australia. For countries where we do not have a local leader, the Singapore group will follow up with them.

The workgroup leads will be actively putting this local eBook group together.

The technology communication divide is here to stay and we will be actively finding solutions to overcome the challenges.
