Athanasios Tsakonas, author of the book 'In Honour of War Heroes' Buy the Book from Amazon.sg Buy from Kinokuniya Buy from Book Depository Please check here for the Zoom recording of this inspiring tea party, sharing with the Author >>>   Zoom Site Passcode: J.2X*b1j One comment from Jason Ang: I found out that from the Kranji War Memorial there exist a vista along Kranji Road to the coast where the tree in the sea use to be when I was a child. The vista carried on to Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque on a knoll in JB that was built between 1892 and 1900. Looks likely that Colin may have intentionally aligned the plan to Abu Bakar Mosque as I believed that was one of the point where the Japanese had crossed the straits. The vista looks like a sky streak left by the the 'Hawker Hurricane' designed by Colin St Claire Oakes

Technology Desk - Keeping up with Technology

What is the current state of AI? Lee Kai-Fu explained deep learning and how it can help humans to be better.  Then 70 years ago ... There is always the question of whether AI can think like a human, not that all human has the same capacity to think intelligently. However, the crucial test of whether an AI is human is that the human has self-consciousness. An AI without self-consciousness is therefore not a human. In 1950, Alan Turing formulated the Turing test to test whether a machine could think like a human being. Eliza passed the test. I was having a go at it in 1989 on my Mac SE, that was really fun and amazing talking to a machine that was so life-like. (Note: Here is a link to try talking to Eliza .) I had tried a few chatbots and nothing more inspiring than Eliza. I was not able to engage in a human-like conversation in the past but with Eliza, it really felt as if I was talking to a human. ( Best Chatbot. ) In 2018 … After that, I tried many devices and applications but none I

News Desk - What can Urban Designers and Architects do in the calamity of the Devastating Floods in Pakistan

Image
The climate is becoming detrimental, a third of Pakistan is flooded. Was it due to Climate change? More than a thousand people died, and millions of homes were destroyed.  Many NGO's got into action to help. The Unicef , AnglicanAids , Islamic Relief ,  Unite for Change and many other organizations started to give aid and asked for donations. How are the aids and donations going to be disbursed to reach those who needed help? Many questions remain as questions, but the works need to be done.  What can Urban Designers and Architects do?  On the 28th of August I received a whatsapp message from Ar Tariq    Repubished below ‘INTBAU Pakistan’ has begun a Shelter Program for flood-hit families in Sindh. Architect Yasmeen Lari’s video message lays out the specifics and technicalities of this initiative (attached). Those interested in contributing to these ‘ Prefab Bamboo Shelters ’ (Rs: 25,000/- per unit), can review this self-explanatory video and proceed directly to donations - or sen

Features Desk - Planning in Kazakhstan: A Personal Account

Image
Features Desk Wei Kiang y2koh.wk@gmail.com The first time I went to Kazakhstan was in November 2006. Before touching down in the capital Nur-Sultan (formerly Astana), Kazakhstan, my only impression of Kazakhstan was that it is a country on the steppes and where the former silk road passes through. Nur-Sultan was an industrial city set up during the Soviet era and was known as Tselinograd, and later Akmola after the independence of Kazakhstan, it became the capital of Kazakhstan only fairly recently in 1997. The name Astana used from 1997 to 2019 literally meant Capital City in Kazakh. Nurjol Boulevard Ishim River Promenade I visited Nur-Sultan with the multi-disciplinary team as part of a project for the transport planning and to propose Transit-Oriented Developments (TODs) for the city. It was a surprise for me that the society and culture in Nur-Sultan was heavily influenced by western cultures, likely from the 74 years of Kazakhstan under Soviet rule. The government of Kazakhstan
